Wrinkles are, sadly, a natural consequence of ageing. They are the creases, folds or ridges that appear in the skin as we mature. Their prominence can vary from fine lines, often termed crow’s feet, that appear around the eyes to vertical lines between the brows. People can get what are called laughter lines, so called as they crease when we laugh, these nasolabial folds extend from both sides of the nose down to the mouth.

Common Causes
Even with the best of skincare routines, wrinkles are an inevitable part of ageing.
As our skin ages, it loses collagen and elastin, making it thinner and drier, so more likely to crease. Our facial expressions move our skin when we laugh, squint or frown, then as skin loses its elasticity, the creases don’t bounce back like they did when we were younger.
Wrinkles are often accelerated by excessive sun exposure or through smoking. Sun radiation damages collagen, so making skin lose further thickness and elasticity. The act of smoking, puckering the lips can add to wrinkles as well as the fact that toxins in cigarette smoke damage collagen too, decreasing skin thickness.

What can I do about my wrinkles?
You don’t have to treat your wrinkles, as they represent a fully expressed life. But if they bother you, you can choose non-surgical or surgical treatments.
Non-surgical treatments often include anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers targeting areas like forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines to improve skin texture and facial aesthetics. By temporarily relaxing targeted facial muscles, these anti-wrinkle injections help to smooth out wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions, providing a more youthful look.
An alternative option to address deeper more set lines as well as finer wrinkles, is radiofrequency tightening such as morpheus 8 burst. The combination of fractionated heat energy and microneedling stimulates collagen production which smooths out wrinkles and tightens the skin.
If you’d like more extensive treatment of wrinkles, you may consider a face lift. It’s a procedure that involves the removal of excess skin, tightening facial muscles and tissues, and the repositioning of skin to create a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. It can effectively address issues such as sagging skin, deep wrinkles, and jowls, to restore a firmer, smoother, and more youthful contour to the face.

I’ve already been assessed for my skin wrinkles
If you’ve already discussed your wrinkles with a cosmetic surgery consultant, you may have filled in an assessment form from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. See Example.
If you have previously completed an assessment form for your condition, please do bring a copy to your initial consultation.
