From your late twenties to early thirties, you may start to notice a loss of volume in your face. It’s a natural consequence of ageing and happens to everyone, though lifestyle and genetics can have an impact too.

Common Causes

As we age, our bodies go through a number of changes, including a reduction in collagen and elastin production. Collagen gives skin its firmness, and the decrease leads to sagging skin and facial volume loss.

Another contributor to loss of facial volume is the shrinking of the fat pads that provide structure to the face. This can lead to hollowed cheeks, sunken eyes, and a less youthful appearance. In addition, thinning bones which are another part of ageing can contribute to a less supportive bone structure for the face, leading to sagging skin and a loss of fullness. Lifestyle factors like excessive sun exposure can accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin, contributing to premature facial volume loss.

Additionally, some people may be predisposed through their genes to lose facial volume quicker than others.

What can I do about my facial volume loss?

There are non-surgical solutions to facial volume loss in the form of hyaluronic acid fillers, which smooth out wrinkles and can replace lost volume.

A more permanent option to restore volume loss is fat grafting. The benefit is that this replaces ‘like for like’ tissue, utilises a patients own fat and also delivers stem cells to the region which provide their own rejuvenation benefit, promoting collagen and elastin production.

Surgical solutions include a face lift which tightens the skin and lifts and redistributes the underlying tissues to restore facial volume to where it is required. It can effectively address issues such as sagging skin, to restore a fuller, smoother, and more youthful contour to the face.
