What causes under eye bags?

Under eye bags are a common part of the ageing process. In fact, because the skin in this area is so delicate, it is often one of the first places we see the visible signs of ageing.

The natural ageing process leads to the underlying tissue becoming weaker, while excess fat can cause a puffiness around the lower lid.

As the skin starts to lose elasticity, sagging skin may form around the upper or lower eyelid, which adds to you looking older and more tired.

Other factors that can cause eye bags to develop include:

  •       Genetics
  •       Sun damage
  •       Stress
  •       Smoking
  •       Lifestyle habits

Fine lines, crepey skin and dark shadows under the eyes can also become more visible with age.

What is eye bag removal surgery?

Eye bag removal, also commonly referred to as blepharoplasty, helps to improve the appearance of your upper or lower eyelids by removing excess fat or excess skin from the eye area.

The procedure performed will depend on what your concerns are and whether they affect the lower lid, upper lid, or both.

A blepharoplasty procedure involves:

  •       Upper eyelid surgery to remove loose skin on the upper lid
  •       Lower eyelid surgery to correct dark circles and under eye bags

You may require surgery on both areas or one area. But there are benefits to having both done in one procedure.

Including a lower blepharoplasty procedure as part of your surgery can create smoother skin on the lower lid and give your eye area more contour.

Eyelid surgery is commonly linked with an oculoplastic surgeon, but Mr Ridha’s extensive experience in facial plastic surgery enables him to deliver natural and balanced results.

The benefits of eye bag surgery

Eye bag removal surgery has both cosmetic and practical benefits, which include:

  •       To reduce an ageing facial appearance
  •       Improve dark shadows underneath the eyes
  •       Reduce excess fat and puffy lower eyelids
  •       Minimise crepey and lined skin
  •       Improved definition to the outer corners of the eyes
  •       No more tired eye appearance
  •       Eyes look more fresh and open which can increase confidence

For some patients, upper eyelid surgery can help with blurred vision. This is only when vision impairment is associated with excess skin on the upper lid.

What to expect during eye bag removal in Hertfordshire

Initial consultation

The first step is to meet with Mr Hyder Ridha who will assess your facial structure and concerns in your eye area.

He will also look at your medical history and discuss your treatment goals. He will create a tailored blepharoplasty treatment plan designed to meet your individual needs.

Blepharoplasty procedure

A blepharoplasty procedure is typically performed under local anaesthetic. However, depending on the extent of your surgery, we may discuss using general anaesthetic for your safety and comfort.

The blepharoplasty removes excess skin and fat (or repositions) to create a smooth and more youthful look.

Mr Ridha will make small incisions inside the eyelid (transconjunctival blepharoplasty) if patients only need fat removal.

If skin removal is also required, he will make small incisions below the lash line. This incision tends to extend to the outer corner of the eye.

To close the incisions, Mr Ridha will use fine sutures to support optimal healing.

What is the recovery period for eye bag surgery?

The early recovery stage following eye bag removal can look different from patient to patient.

However, for most patients the initial recovery stages can include:

  •       Swelling, bruising and tightness for the first few days
  •       Most people take a up to a week off work to recover

There can be discomfort and mild to pain a few hours after your surgery. Mr Ridha will recommend some pain killers to help you manage this.

To help you heal fully, we advise you to:

  •       Keep your head elevated while resting
  •       Do not wear makeup and contact lenses for the first week
  •       Use a cold compress to reduce any swelling
  •       Avoid strenuous activity for the first six weeks
  •       Do not go to saunas or steam rooms for six weeks
  •       You should avoid direct sunbathing for the first 3-6 months

Most swelling will go down in the first six weeks. Mr Ridha will schedule follow-up appointments to ensure you are healing well and to check in your results.

Eye bag removal results

You will start to see your results as swelling goes down within the first six weeks. Most patients notice a brighter eye area and less puffiness.

The final results will show after 3-6 months.

Your under eye area will typically look more refreshed and youthful for 7-10 years.

The results are not permanent as we cannot stop skin ageing. But we will recommend a good anti-ageing skincare routine to follow so that you can maintain your results.

You should always protect your eyes from the sun. This includes wearing high factor protection as sun damage tends to age the eye area much faster.
