Breasts are individual, so come in all shapes and sizes. However, some women struggle with particularly large or heavy breasts. Heavy breasts can cause significant physical discomfort, such as back, neck and shoulder pain, which can impact on daily life and well-being. Some women may also dislike the physical appearance of heavy breasts and the attention that they can attract.

Common Causes
The size and shape of your breasts is largely determined by your genes, so is entirely natural. Generally they’re proportional to body size and frame, but sometimes small framed women have large breasts. Breasts are also affected by hormones and so can feel heavier when these hormone levels change, for example during the menopause. Taking the contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) causes levels of oestrogen and progesterone to fluctuate which can lead to fluid retention and heavier breasts. Periods, pregnancy and breastfeeding commonly cause breasts to feel heavier.

What can I do about heavy breasts?
Wearing a well-fitting bra is important to give your heavy breasts support. It’s useful to get measured by a professionally trained bra-fitter regularly, as your breast size can change with age and fluctuations in weight and time of the month. If you’re a fan of sport, heavy breasts can be a bit of a liability, as they bounce and can cause pain when doing anything energetic. A good quality sports bra relevant to the activity is useful in these instances.
However, if your heavy breasts cause you pain and impact on your wellbeing, you might want to consider breast reduction surgery.

I’ve already been assessed for my heavy breasts
If you’ve already discussed your heavy breasts with a cosmetic surgery consultant, you may have filled in a breast assessment form from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. See Example.
If you have previously completed an assessment form for your condition, please do bring a copy to your initial consultation.
