Breast implants are used to enhance the size, shape or fullness of the breast. Breast implants may need replacing or removing after a several years, either due to an issue with the implants, due to changes in the shape of the breast as part of the natural ageing process or purely personal preference.
If you’ve had implants in the past, you may notice certain changes or symptoms that could indicate a problem and that the implant needs to be removed or replaced.
Implants consist of an inner silicone gel or saline and and outer silicone gel. There is a small risk that the implant may rupture or leak resulting in a deflated appearance.
As the implant is a foreign body it elicits a normal body reaction of creating a layer of scar tissue around the implant, called a capsule. The capsule is normally thin and barely perceptible. However, in some cases overtime the capsule may thicken and harden which deforms the shape of the implant and therefore the breast. It can also cause discomfort in the form of tightness or even pain. This is known as capsular contracture.
If there is confirmed rupture of an implant or capsular contracture, the implant as well as the scar tissue will need removal. This procedure is called a capsulectomy.
The implant may or may not be replaced depending on the individuals desires. Additional procedures may be performed in combination such as a breast lift, breast reduction or breast enhancement with fat grafting rather than a repeat implant augmentation.
