A tummy pouch, also known as a pooch, or belly apron actually has a technical name; a panniculus. It’s a bulge of excess skin and fat that hangs down at the front of your lower belly. It’s extremely stubborn to the effects of working out or dieting.

Common Causes
Although many people, especially women, tend to accumulate fat in this area, a tummy pouch typically appears after pregnancy or losing a large amount of weight.
A tummy pouch typically develops in pregnant women due to the uterus’s natural expansion. As the baby grows, so does the uterus. When the uterus stretches, so do the muscles and skin surrounding it, leading to looseness in the tummy area. It’s the same with weight gain. When the baby is born, or a large amount of weight is lost, the skin doesn’t always spring back, leaving you with loose sagging skin.

What can I do about my tummy pouch?
Many people choose a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) or mini tummy tuck to address loose or sagging skin in the abdominal area that is stubbornly unaffected by diet or exercise.
It’s important to note though that a tummy tuck is not a weight loss solution and you should be at a near ideal bodyweight before the procedure.

I’ve already been assessed for my tummy pouch
If you’ve already discussed your tummy pouch with a cosmetic surgery consultant, you may have filled in an assessment form from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. See Example.
If you have previously completed an assessment form for your condition, please do bring a copy to your initial consultation.
